- We develop an app that uses AI to translate complex doctor’s reports into understandable human language.
- Objective:
- Give patients more insight in their own health.
- Ensure that patients can take informed decisions.
- Better treatment results.

With EXPLAINMED, we research the development of a tool that enables patients to scan their doctor’s report and read it in everyday language. How is that possible? By using artificial intelligence (AI) that can recognise medical terms automatically. You are also referred to useful links for additional reliable information. In this project, the primary focus is on reports of patients with heart disease.
Healthcare providers employ technical medical jargon that is not always comprehensible to the average person. Past studies have indicated that in a single patient consultation, medical jargon can be used as many as 70 times.
Why
Even if the healthcare provider’s oral explanation is clear, it is possible that the patient may not remember it due to various factors such as emotions, health condition, medication, etc. Subsequently, patients can refer to the medical report available in their electronic file. This report is not easily understandable due to the overuse of medical terms. An incomprehensible explanation can lead to the patient not following the therapy properly, resulting in less involvement and potential further health complications. This subsequently has societal implications and contributes to the rise in healthcare costs.
Partners
NextGenics, in partnership with KdG University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Forcit, Ghent University and Cebam, investigates the application of AI in translating reports into comprehensible text. The patient will be involved both prior to and throughout the development of the tool to assess its usability and whether it meets expectations.
