Invisible Loss: Support needs of parents after early pregnancy loss

In this research, we aim to gain insights into the experiences and support needs of parents experiencing pregnancy loss before 13 weeks, as well as the current support available to this group.

  • In brief:
    • Due to the lack of a centralized registration system in Flanders and underreporting, there is insufficient awareness, appropriate support, and policy endeavors.
    • With these research results, we aim to develop targeted support for parents and provide additional training for healthcare professionals.

Problem statement

Losing a child during pregnancy greatly affects the woman and her family, both physically and mentally. It is estimated that 1 in 10 pregnancies ends in loss. Assuming that most women become pregnant multiple times in their lives, 1 in 6 to 1 in 4 women may face a pregnancy loss. However, it is unclear exactly how many pregnancies end in miscarriage, as no registration system exists in Flanders and early pregnancy loss is underreported.

In Flanders, pregnancies are often announced only after the first trimester, making pregnancy loss during this period a taboo. Women and their partners report that this type of loss is often a lonely experience, with no clear policy or follow-up. There is an urgent need for greater awareness and support.

Research questions

What do women and their partners experience after an early pregnancy loss (before 13 weeks)? What support do they need?

Research approach

We will conduct a literature review and a mixed-method needs assessment with parents. This will include a survey and individual interviews. Our goal is to understand the support needs of women and their partners after a first-trimester pregnancy loss.

Expected output

After the first project year:

  • Report with research findings.
  • Press release.

Other long-term outcomes:

  • Publication in a relevant scientific journal.
  • Integration of findings on the website www.perinataalverlies.be
  • Initiation of an evidence-based practice (EBP) guideline for early pregnancy loss.
  • Inspiration for follow-up projects based on identified needs.
  • Input for the development of training programs for midwives and other involved healthcare providers.

Valorization

  • Final conference and dissemination event.
  • Dissemination of outputs via project website, social media, and newsletter.
  • Active distribution of outputs through our partner network.
