Indygame

Indygame is a game for discussing intercultural dynamics in teams in day-care centres, out-of-school clubs and primary schools. We tested the game with different teams in different places.

Diversity and interculturalism are high on the agenda in our society. In Antwerp, more than 70% of children aged 0-9 have roots in migration. Moreover, diversity is increasing. Sociologists currently speak of super-diversity. Childcare and primary education are frontline sectors. They are the first to be confronted with this super-diversity. How to deal with it is a question many childcare workers and primary school teachers struggle with.

In this project, we make childcare and school teams discuss awareness of intercultural dynamics using the Indy game, a game that builds on the Diabolo game. The Diabolo game was developed by the former Kruispunt Migration Integration, now part of the Agency for Integration and Inclusion, in cooperation with the integration centre Prisma vzw and ODICe vzw.

The game starts from a clear frame of reference, based on various science-based models on interculturalism and change management. It presents teams with several concrete situation sketches interspersed with knowledge questions.

Through design research, we translated the Diabolo game into a new version: the Indy game. We went through and three cycles of designing, testing, evaluating and adjusting a prototype each time in all three sectors. Participant participation was important during the testing phase.

Result

The research results culminated in an adapted game that a pedagogical supervisor can play with teams in day-care centres, out-of-school care centres and primary schools. For each sector, there are adapted sets consisting of situation sketches with answers and knowledge questions.

We made a manual to accompany the game. This allows the game supervisor to choose the cases and design the debriefing. Teams can play the game to gain insight into their spontaneous handling of intercultural dynamics, but the game can also be the starting point of a process to work on intercultural competencies.
