Employment conditions

Working at a university college takes some doing. We'd like to answer the most frequently asked questions about vacancies. We distinguish between OP (teaching staff) and ATP (administrative and technical staff).

Contractually and statutorily

You can be employed at KdG in different ways: statutorily or contractually.

  • All staff members who are paid with the funds we receive from the Flemish Community's department of Education, are statutorily employed.
  • Contractual workers are paid directly by the university college with the funds we have collected ourselves (for example through tuition fees and project earnings).
  • Both statutes exist in parallel and differ solely in the financing source. It does not have an impact on staff members' intrinsic assignment. Assignments combining both statutes are also possible.
  • Some employment conditions are different for statutory and contractual workers. The main differences concern the acquisition of pension rights and sickness insurance. A contractual worker can never get tenure. Salary and vacation days are identical for both statutes in similar positions.

In our HR policy, we equalise the rights of both statutes where possible.

Ah yes, the elephant in the room. Whether you are teaching staff or administrative and technical staff, you can easily find your salary online:

  • For each vacancy a wage scale is mentioned.
  • In addition, you'll also receive holiday allowance and an annual bonus.
  • For specific positions, you can also request a data subscription and/or a mobile phone.

Examples of salary:

  • ATP with complete seniority and full-time employment: gross salary between 2473.29 and 4596.58 euro (with a bachelor's degree)
  • OP with complete seniority and full-time employment: gross salary 3433.43 and 5538.72 euro (as practical lecturer)

Relevant professional experience outside education can be considered as seniority, because we appreciate relevant experience from different positions and organisations.

This is our time to shine:

  • OP: 55 holidays for full-time employment. You follow the course of the academic year. You take your holidays in the vacation period.
  • ATP: 45 holidays for full-time employment. Part of the holidays are collectively fixed, others you can take up freely.

Let's be honest, we've left the time where you had to go to the office every day behind us, and for the better.

  • Instead, we aim for a healthy mix of on-site and remote working, balancing the benefits of working from home and real-life collaboration.
  • We don't impose rules but we encourage teams to come up with agreements of their own, focusing on the achievement of strong services.
  • A specific teacher training is not necessary, unless you want to teach the teacher training programme.
  • To teach other degree programmes, it is considered a bonus point,
  • as practical experience or experience in the business are also important.

On the other hand, a strong motivation and drive to work with students are a must, as is the increase of your pedagogical skills. There's no need to worry, though. We are specifically investing in supporting new lecturers without any prior teaching experience.

In short, you do not need an extra degree to teach.

Growth and development are an integral part of working at a university college. This is possible in your job and through a wide range of extracurricular activities. Our trainings include a wide variety of options for lecturers, supporting staff members, managers and teams, from workshops to more detailed programmes.

  • The programme 'effective education', spread out over several days, is specifically meant for new lecturers.
  • In addition, each year we organise a university college congress, which is the perfect moment to network with your colleagues at KdG on a strategic topic.
I took a leap of faith and got the opportunity to explore—something I will be forever grateful for.

  • And yes, there is free coffee at the office. The quality of it is up for debate, but when is it not?
  • You can wear what you feel comfortable in. Our dress code can be described as everyday casual.

As a university college, we follow the employment conditions of Education Flanders.

A university college appeals to me because I want to keep learning. If you work in an environment where learning is the core business, there isn't a better match.
