Many patients don’t understand what their doctor means in his or her report. They talk too fast, use all kinds of complicated medical terms, and often the message causes them emotional (di)stress. And just like that you find yourself standing outside your doctor’s practice, sheaf of papers in hand and not quite sure what’s next. Now things are set to change. We are developing the ExplainMed app with which you can scan your doctor's report. The app uses artificial intelligence (AI) to translate the text into common language. It also directs you to useful and reliable sites with additional information. No more asking Doctor Google.
Focus on heart disease
In this project, the primary focus is on reports of patients with heart disease. Together with NextGenics, Forcit, Ghent University and Cebam, we are investigating how AI can be used to translate a report into an understandable text. Patients are involved both in the run-up and during the development of this tool to test whether it is user-friendly and meets expectations. In the context of privacy, it is also vital that this tool does not share or keep records.
