Future-driven Education

Research centre

Our research covers these three themes:

  • Support needs of pupils
  • Authentic learning
  • Sustainable careers and leadership
  • We provide answers to questions on these subjects in schools.
  • We develop practice-based tools that can be used in the workplace, such as practical guides, ICT applications, as well as continuing education courses.
  • The main question: How do we introduce the world into a diverse classroom and shape educational careers sustainably?

Support needs of pupils

A diverse society is a diverse classroom. How do ensure all pupils feel at ease in the classroom? We offer support for achieving this. We develop tools to support culturally and linguistically diverse classes, and explore how to promote a positive classroom climate.

Examples

  • How do you use a subtitling app for foreign-language pupils in the classroom?
  • How do you use artificial intelligence to give teachers feedback on their language teaching?
  • How do you encourage language development in extracurricular activities
  • How do you achieve a positive classroom climate
  • What is the best approach to diversity in class groups?

Authentic learning

With authentic learning, you introduce the real world into your classroom, or you seek out the real world with your pupils, thereby underpinning the learning process with relevant challenges and problems. What is the added value of authentic learning and how do you apply it in your school? Our research helps you do just that. We develop tools and conceptual frameworks, but also develop collaborations with external partners ensure you can put authentic learning in practice in your school.

Examples

  • How do you achieve learning gains as a school by participating in citizen science projects (such as CurieuzeNeuzen or AIRbezen)?
  • How can we best organise dual learning
  • How do you discuss controversial topics in class?
  • How do you evaluate competences that are more difficult to measure?

Sustainable careers and leadership

Attracting and retaining teachers can be quite difficult, and so is finding good school leaders. We offer tools and support to facilitate motivating careers in education, and detect leadership potential

Examples

  • How do you become an attractive employer as a school?
  • How do you find and retain good school leaders
  • What is a motivating career for a teacher?

In DECIDE, we seek the most effective and efficient strategies that aid in the development of a new competency, the ‘de-biasing & life skills competence’.
