Find student housing in Antwerp

Finding a place to live is one of the first concrete steps after your admission. With the right timing and platforms, you can find a room to call your Antwerp home.

KdG does not provide student accommodation, but we guide you towards reliable options.

Finding housing can be competitive, especially for international students, so it’s essential to secure a place online before you travel. Begin looking as soon as you receive your (conditional) enrolment letter.

  • Degree students: most rooms become available in April-May
  • Exchange students: start once your application is confirmed

The later in the year you search, the fewer options remain and the higher prices usually become.

No housing before the academic year starts? we strongly advise you not to travel to Antwerp yet. Don't rely on staying in a hostel and looking for accommodation once you’re here. Contact Student Services for advice and guidance: studentservices@kdg.be

Living alone for the first time in a foreign country can be scary but KdG always made a great effort to help me with any questions.

Most students rent a “kot”: a private room in a shared student house with a communal kitchen and bathroom.

Average monthly rent (excluding utilities +/- 80 euros):

  • Kot (room with shared facilities): +/- 500 euros
  • Studio (private bathroom and/or kitchen): +/- 620 euros
  • Apartment: +/- 850 euros

To keep in mind:

  • A rental deposit of usually 2–3 months’ rent is required.
  • Additional costs may include internet, furniture and start-up utility fees.
  • Short-term or semester contracts are more limited and often more expensive.

Remote video URL
  • The best and safest option is Kotweb, Antwerp’s largest housing database (over 5,000 listings). It includes quality and fire safety labels.
  • Facebook offers a range of housing groups, from private landlords to students who are subletting their rooms. But always be cautious scams on Facebook.
  • Alternatively, you can check regular housing websites, such as Immoweb, Zimmo, or Immoscoop. Please note that listings there are not exclusively student housing, so regular rental law applies.
  • We do not recommend Airbnb or tourist accommodation for long stays, as it is not possible to register your address, which you need for your residence permit.

Avoiding housing scams

  • Always ask for the landlord’s contact details and ID copy before paying.
  • Check if the bank account number is Belgian. Never pay via PayPal or Western Union.
  • Check if the address appears on Kotweb and check Google Street View too.
  • Learn more about fraud prevention on Kotweb’s fraud alert page.
  • Questions about quality? Request a free quality survey by phone (+32 3 338 75 74) or email: studentenhuisvesting@stad.antwerpen.be.
  • You can also contact Kotweb, STAN/GATE15, or Student Services with any questions.

99% of students do not experience problems — but caution is essential.

Most student rooms are rented on a fixed-term contract of 10 or 12 months, often running from September to June or September to August.

  • Many student contracts cannot be ended early without penalty.
  • Some contracts allow early termination with a notice period, others do not.
  • Always check:
    • Duration of the contract
    • Notice period
    • Conditions for early cancellation
    • Who pays utilities and internet
  • Some rental contracts include fire insurance with a waiver of recourse. Always check whether this is mentioned explicitly in your contract.

If anything is unclear, ask the landlord for clarification before signing.

Look for accommodation close to your campus:

  • Campus Groenplaats (IBM & Applied Computer Science): Theatre district, Nationalestraat, University area, North.
  • Campus Zuid / Hoboken (Multimedia & Creative Technology): Zuid, Brederode, City Centre, Hoboken, or Wilrijk.
  • Campus Zuid (Nursing): Zuid, Brederode, City Centre.

It’s a great idea to ask a KdG student about types of accommodation, neighbourhoods or student life in general. They will give you some great advice. You can do this via the KdG In&Out Facebook group, where you’ll find:

  • Students subletting their room during exchange
  • Students looking for roommates
  • Students selling or giving away furniture

KdG is not responsible for accommodation posted in this group. Always verify the listing via Kotweb and the landlord directly.

Most students who stay in Belgium for 3 months or longer need a Belgian residence permit. To apply for this permit, you must be able to officially register your address in Antwerp after arrival.

This means your accommodation must allow address registration. If you are temporarily staying in a hostel or with friends, your application cannot start yet.
