(Doctoral)Assistant Ethics of Technology and AI (Dutch) - 20 %

(Doctoral)Assistant Ethics of Technology and AI (Dutch), Digital Cultures (English), supervision of master's theses (Dutch & English) – 20%

Who are we?

Sint Lucas Antwerpen, School of Arts, a learning and research environment that embraces, explores, and contributes to a multivoiced world. We are deeply engaged with the metropolitan context and committed to supporting our students. Sint Lucas Antwerpen aims to educate students to become (self-)critical citizens.

Sint Lucas Antwerpen is part of Karel de Grote University of Applied Sciences and Arts, which comprises 9 campuses, 38 degree programmes, more than 100 continuing education opportunities, 6 research centres, approximately 14,500 students and 1,599 staff members.

What is your role?

As a (doctoral) assistant in the Visual Arts academic programme, you will teach the bachelor’s course ‘Ethics of Technology and AI’ (in Dutch) and the English-language master’s course ‘Digital Cultures’ (in English).

For ‘Ethics of Technology and AI’, you critically engage with developments in AI and the underlying technologies, with attention to systems thinking, ecological and social impact, the effect on creative makers, and the role of the artist in a technological context.

‘Digital Cultures’ explores the role of art and design in the digital age and its impact on society and identity. This intensive seminar focuses on new media, technology, and their philosophical and political implications.

Additionally, you may be asked to supervise master’s theses that bridge technology, digital media, design, and art.

You reflect on new content and teaching methods, coach students in their learning process, facilitate learning through feedback, and assess their progress. You contribute to the realisation of the vision of Sint Lucas Antwerpen.

Specifically:

  • You design and prepare lessons, develop, guide, and assess learning processes.
  • You actively seek ways to address diversity within student groups.
  • Together with colleagues, you contribute to curriculum development and the further advancement of the programme.
  • You take on teaching and organisational support tasks in line with your talents and interests, such as participating in open days, sample classes, exhibitions, etc.
  • You take responsibility for your own professional development, both in terms of subject knowledge and pedagogical-didactic skills, and actively contribute to knowledge development within the Sint Lucas Antwerpen teaching group.
  • You maintain an effective network with peers from the sector.
  • You will work on the Sint Lucas Antwerpen campus and be part of the theory team. You report to the Head of Programme of the Master of Visual Arts.

What is your profile?

  • You relate well to students and share your knowledge and insights with passion. You provide open and constructive feedback.
  • You are able to integrate changes within your domain of expertise into the artistic practice of students and into research.
  • You highlight how theoretical frameworks impact the creative field.
  • You have good connections with colleagues and experts in your field and are willing to use these connections for the benefit of the Sint Lucas Antwerpen teaching group.
  • You can use ICT tools in your work. At Sint Lucas Antwerpen, teaching staff work with standard MS Office programmes, the digital learning environment Canvas, and the digital platform e-studentservice.
  • You can inspire and motivate colleagues. Within a team, you foster collaboration.

Additionally, you hold a master’s or doctoral degree (or are currently pursuing a PhD) in Philosophy, Cultural Studies, (Digital) Media, Digital Humanities, or another relevant field. A teaching qualification is considered an asset.
For English-taught courses, an ERK B2 level is required. For the Dutch-taught course, a C1 level is expected. You can demonstrate this with a diploma or certificate or be willing to obtain it before the start of your teaching assignment (don’t worry — we’ll provide the necessary information and support).

What do we offer you?

  • A part-time contract position. You will start on or before 15 September 2025 with a one-year contract, which may be renewed after a positive evaluation.
  • Benefits such as flexible working hours, the possibility of hybrid working, a generous number of vacation days (55 days for a full-time position), a monthly internet allowance of €20, a teacher card with various benefits, and the option of hospitalisation insurance at a favourable rate.
  • A salary based on the assistant scale (502) for master’s degree holders, and the doctoral assistant scale (509) for doctorate holders. Click here for more information. Note that relevant professional experience outside of education may count towards your seniority.
  • A warm welcome from our Theory team. We’re a collaborative group that shares a strong commitment to students, critical thinking, and the role of theory in contemporary artistic education.
  • An environment where you will have plenty of space and responsibility to carry out your role.
  • In addition to a general KdG orientation day where you’ll get to know KdG and Sint Lucas Antwerpen as an organisation, you’ll also have access to a wide range of internal and external training opportunities. At Sint Lucas Antwerpen, your growth is fully supported — room for theory and practice, for experimentation and innovation. You will have support throughout your journey. Every new staff member receives a tailored professional development programme and support from a teaching coach.
  • Our commitment to continuously build an inclusive work environment where everyone can be themselves and learn from each other. We strongly believe in the power of diversity and complementarity and are convinced that a diverse group of colleagues and an inclusive context make us all better, stronger, and more talented. We aim for innovative and challenging arts education and artistic research with room for growth. We want to bring out the best in you and in ourselves and grow together. That’s why we invite everyone to apply.
  • Commuting costs via public transport are reimbursed at 100%, and cycling to work is compensated at €0.27 per km.

Waarom werken bij KdG?

Eerlijk?

Iedereen is welkom.
